Here we try to give a simple explanation, designed for non-technicians (and for technicians who want to explain it in an easy way to others). <\/p>\n<h2>What is Clean Core?<\/h2>\n<p>The idea is simple: keep the SAP S\/4HANA core clean, with no direct modifications. Instead of lifelong <em>zetas<\/em>, any customization to the standard would be done with SAP-approved extensions. Why?  <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>So that upgrades don&#8217;t break anything.<\/li>\n<li>To be able to adopt innovations faster.<\/li>\n<li>To reduce maintenance costs and technical risks.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Where does it apply?<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>S\/4HANA Public Cloud \u00ae You can&#8217;t touch the standard.<\/li>\n<li>S\/4HANA Private Cloud (RISE) \u00ae Old code is still allowed, but SAP pushes to clean up.<\/li>\n<li>S\/4HANA On-Premise \u00ae optional, but highly recommended so as not to have a &#8216;heavy and old&#8217; system.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-1105 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/xpertux.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/SAP-Clean-Core-2-300x200.webp\" alt=\"SAP Clean Core\" width=\"353\" height=\"236\" srcset=\"https:\/\/xpertux.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/SAP-Clean-Core-2-300x200.webp 300w, https:\/\/xpertux.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/SAP-Clean-Core-2-1024x683.webp 1024w, https:\/\/xpertux.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/SAP-Clean-Core-2.webp 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 353px) 100vw, 353px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>How are extensions made then?<\/h2>\n<p>Here we find two very different forms:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>  In-App Extensibility (within SAP)  <\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li>Custom Fields &amp; Logic: add Z fields and lightweight logic.<\/li>\n<li>UI Adaptation: customize Fiori screens without code.<\/li>\n<li>Workflows and BRF+: configurable approval rules.<\/li>\n<li>Custom Business Objects: your own &#8216;Z tables&#8217; but clean.<\/li>\n<li>Embedded Analytics: customized reports and KPIs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Ideal for quick and easy changes.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li><strong>  Side-by-Side Extensibility (outside, in SAP BTP)  <\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>APIs and events are used to connect S\/4HANA with external applications in SAP BTP.<\/p>\n<p>Example: an app that analyzes suppliers with AI and connects via API to the purchasing module.<\/p>\n<p>Ideal for complex logic, integrations or new apps.<\/p>\n<h2>What about the famous BAdIs?<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Classic ABAP BAdIs (from ECC) \uf0ae They are not Clean Core, they mess up the core.<\/li>\n<li>Key User BAdIs (exposed in Fiori \/ Custom Fields &amp; Logic) \uf0ae Yes they are part of the In-App extensibility and are Clean Core friendly.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In short: not all BAdIs are valid. Only the ones that SAP has &#8216;cleaned up&#8217; and put in the extensibility framework. <\/p>\n<h2>Examples in Purchasing (MM)<\/h2>\n<p>In the purchasing module, for example, Clean Core could be applied as follows:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>No Clean Core: modifying a standard program to validate amounts in a<\/li>\n<li>Clean Core: use the BAdI MM_PUR_S4_PO_MODIFY_ITEM to add a validation to the creation of a<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Other examples of In-App BAdIs available:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>MM_PUR_S4_PR_MODIFY_ITEM: logic in purchase requisitions.<\/li>\n<li>MM_PUR_S4_PO_RELEASE: customize order release.<\/li>\n<li>MM_PUR_S4_RFQ_MODIFY_HEADER\/ITEM: validate RFQs.<\/li>\n<li>MM_PUR_S4_PO_OUTPUT: control order output (email, printing, etc.).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-1107 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/xpertux.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/SAP-Clean-Core-3-300x168.webp\" alt=\"SAP Clean Core  \" width=\"364\" height=\"204\" srcset=\"https:\/\/xpertux.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/SAP-Clean-Core-3-300x168.webp 300w, https:\/\/xpertux.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/SAP-Clean-Core-3-1024x573.webp 1024w, https:\/\/xpertux.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/SAP-Clean-Core-3.webp 1430w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 364px) 100vw, 364px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>Advantages and risks of Clean Core<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Advantages:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Easier to upgrade.<\/li>\n<li>Less technical debt.<\/li>\n<li>Cloud-ready.<\/li>\n<li>Lower maintenance costs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Risks\/Challenges:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Initial cost of migrating old developments.<\/li>\n<li>Need to learn new tools.<\/li>\n<li>Some limitations with respect to the &#8216;free code&#8217; of<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Clean Core is not a fad, it is a necessity.<\/p>\n<p>SAP wants all customers to have an easy-to-upgrade, cloud-ready system.<\/p>\n<p>The golden rule is simple: Don&#8217;t touch the standard.
